Not just reserved for Christmas mornings, waffles can be savored any time of the year. However, there's one specific day when the Swedish community indulges in these delectable delights – March 25th, which is Waffle Day!
The team at VonChef asked for my assistance in promoting this charming Swedish custom, so they sent me a waffle maker.
One morning this week, I crafted a small batch of waffles with my daughter, and it was incredibly simple. I'll walk you through our waffle-making journey while sharing more about Waffle Day – and how you can join in on the fun too!
What is Waffle Day? The History of Waffle Day.
When you think of waffles, a different nation might come to mind – after all, every day is Waffle Day in Belgium. To understand why Sweden celebrates Waffle Day on March 25th, you need to know that the Christian holiday ‘Feast of the Annunciation' (also called Lady Day) falls on this date. In Swedish, this is known as Vårfrudagen, which amusingly sounds like Våffeldagen, Swedish for Waffle Day. This feast welcomes the start of spring (just days after the Equinox), and part of the festivities includes – you guessed it, enjoying waffles.
How to Celebrate Waffle Day
Celebrating is quite straightforward. Just enjoy some waffles! In Sweden, you might find this treat in cafes and restaurants on this day. But there's no need to venture out – simply make some at home! The Visit Sweden tourism site even provides an authentic recipe if you want to try an original version. As they note, waffles are particularly loved leading up to Christmas, too.
Making Waffles
So, let's do it. For my own Waffle morning, I enlisted my daughter to help me mix a batch of almond-flour waffles.
Mix your Batter
Butter or spray your surface and pour in the batter.
Close the lid and cook. Since I have a rotating waffle maker, after a minute or two, we flip it for more even cooking (and it makes the wait a little easier).
It takes about 7 minutes for the waffles to turn golden brown.
Top with your favorite toppings. Lydia enjoys adding honey to every square!
The most important part – Enjoy!
If you make waffles, please share photos on the All Things Christmas Facebook Group. I'd love to see your creations!
