son would have a full and meaningful life – and Hermes’ diagnosis ignited a passion in them both. “I had studied journalism, but ended up in financial marketing,” says Omaira. “I decided, ‘Okay, I’m going to pursue journalism rigorously now. Because I need to show my son that if you really want something, you can achieve it, you just have to work hard. It’s where our journey began.” “The Olympics hold a special place in my heart,” concurs Dimitris. “They’re why we met and why I have the family I cherish today.” It seems fitting, says Omaira, that there are five Olympic rings, just as she and Dimitris have five family members. “Although sometimes I joke with Dimitris, ‘You gave me one ring. I need four more to match the Olympic rings.’” Every time the Olympics roll around, I get emotional because that’s where we met. Watching the Greece Olympic opening ceremony always makes me cry because it feels like revisiting where our story started. It was exactly what I hoped for, experiencing the Olympics from the inside.” And ultimately, volunteering brought Omaira to Dimitris – and to 15 years of marriage and counting. “Our marriage is far from perfect, but if I could share a final thought, it would be that there are times when you are deeply in love, and times when you have to choose to love because things get tough,” says Omaira. “You can experience many facets of a relationship with the same person. And also, kids, go forth and volunteer, because you never know what might happen.”
