This year’s Golden Globes ceremony inaugurated awards season with an assortment of diverse retro styles. Elle Fanning dazzled in an archival piece by Pierre Balmain, a cream and white strapless dress from 1960 adorned with an exaggerated bow at the bust. Carey Mulligan sported a vintage Schiaparelli mermaid dress from 1949; with its sliced bodice and structural ruching, the appearance seemed remarkably modern. Meanwhile, the most eye-catching jewelry of the evening was vintage: Dua Lipa wore a Tiffany & Co. necklace from 1962, crafted in gold and platinum with opulent yellow beryl, topaz quartz, and diamonds.

At the 2024 Governor Awards, Olivia Rodrigo graced the event in a sleek black Saint Laurent dress from its fall 1997 couture line. Celebrities such as Claire Danes—in vintage Balmain—and Lizzy Caplan—in Yohji Yamamoto from spring 1999—opted for archival outfits at the 2024 Emmys, while Miley Cyrus donned a vintage (and glittery!) Bob Mackie gown for her rendition of “Flowers” at the 2024 Grammys. These stars’ choice to select pieces from the archives makes a statement beyond fashion. In a bustling, competitive environment like awards season—where there’s intense pressure for celebrities to wear lavish outfits, each surpassing the last—these vintage moments emphasize a need for increased sustainability and awareness on the red carpet (especially considering fashion and its supply chains have considerable ecological impacts). Occasionally, creating new garments isn’t essential—particularly when there is a treasure trove of retro ensembles for celebrities to select from, all of which carry just as much impact.
